Pfefferkorn proudly partnered with Killough Construction and the Kansas Department of Transportation Iola office to deliver critical improvements along Kansas Highway 31. The project enhanced the pavement structural integrity of the corridor and improved safety for motorists traveling through southeastern Kansas.
This narrow route—characterized by limited or no shoulders and steep roadside grades in several areas—presented unique construction challenges. Although the contract included pavement patching, the volume and varying depths of individual repair locations required careful coordination and execution. Killough’s leadership and field crews approached each repair with attention to detail, ensuring every patch restored both the roadway’s integrity and long-term performance.
Pfefferkorn’s inspection and materials testing team worked closely with the contractor to support quality construction and efficient progress. Killough maintained safe traffic flow throughout construction and communicated proactively with residents and stakeholders along the corridor to minimize disruptions. Their team remained highly responsive to inspection staff and quality assurance personnel, fostering open communication and timely resolution of field issues.
Under the daily leadership of Field Foreman Wayland Meiers, the project maintained strong focus on both immediate field details and overall project objectives. The result is a safer, more durable roadway serving the Mapleton community and the broader southeastern Kansas region.

That belief came to life in a powerful way recently, when our team had the privilege of providing pro bono civil engineering and site planning services for …

My brother and I grew up in the same backyard, tackled the same schoolwork, and pushed through the same academic challenges on our way to becoming engineers. We’ve always loved …

Recently one of our co-founders Gabe had the incredible opportunity to introduce a group of bright and curious elementary school students to the world of civil engineering. Seeing their excitement as they explored the basics of construction, bridges, and structures reminded us why we love what we do. We kept it hands-on—mini bridges they could …
